Chicken Dhansak

 

About Chicken Dhansak

Dhansak is popular Parsi dish made with chana dal (or other dal) and chicken, lamb or vegetables (gourd, pumpkins). Dhansak is usually served with basmati rice. The dish is quite easy to make if you use commercial dhansak masala powder. Traditionally mutton (older lamb) Dhansak is popular. More on Dhansak.

 Ingredients

1 lb boneless chicken (bite-sized)
½ cup chana dal (soak at least 24 hour prior)
3 tablespoon chopped ginger
3 green chilies
2 medium sized onions chopped
½ cup chopped tomatoes
3 tablespoons ghee
salt to taste

Spices
3 teaspoons dhansak masala
or
1 inch cinnamon stick (dalchini)
few cardamom pods
few cloves
pinch of turmeric
½ teaspoon cumin powder
½ teaspoon whole cumin
½ teaspoon coriander
½ teaspoon black pepper
or
1 teaspoon garam masala

 Preparation

Heat chana dal with salt until cooked over medium heat. Stir occasionally. It will take from 45 mins to more than 1 hour.

Let chana dal cool after cooking.

While chana dal is cooling, heat ghee in another pan over medium-high heat. Add onions, ginger, green chilies. Fry until onion is golden brown. Add dhansak masala or other alternates.

Simmer for a minute or so.

Add chicken and cook for 5-10 minutes in medium heat.

Make sure chana dal is reasonable cooled. Coarsely blend it in a food processor.

Add the chana dal paste to chicken and let it simmer for 10-20 minutes in low heat.

8 Serve hot over Basmati rice.
